Eight Reasons to Leave Your Car at Home

Many people use their private cars to drive to work on a daily basis. A car is a great vehicle, and owning one can give you a lot of freedom, but in some cases it is better to leave your car at home and use public transportation. Here are some reasons why:
  1. Driving is a task that requires concentration, awareness and wakefulness. It is unsafe to do other things while driving, such as talking on the phone. It is also unsafe to drive while you're tired or affected by alcohol or drugs. While you ride a bus or a train, you have a professional driver driving for you, and in the meanwhile you can nap, work, read a book or a newspaper or just relax.
  2. Using public transportation is cheaper than driving a private car. In some cases it is cheaper than the fuel alone, so even if you already own a car and pay all its permanent expenses, you would save money by leaving it at home.
  3. Trains and subways aren't affected by traffic jams. In some roads there are also special lanes for busses, so in these lanes busses aren't affected either. Not getting stuck in traffic jams save you time.
  4. Riding a bike or walking: If your destination is in a reasonable distance for riding a bike or walking, use one of these methods. These methods are free and healthy. In short distances, like within a city, a car won't be much faster, especially because of traffic lights, jams and parking time.
  5. Busses and trains create less air pollution than all the cars they replace. Keep in mind that one bus can replace 50 cars, and a train can replace much more. Riding a bike and walking don't pollute the air at all. Keeping the air clean keeps all of us a lot healthier.
  6. Reducing traffic jams: Using public transportation instead of private cars saves a lot of space on the roads. If more people used public transportation, there would be less traffic jams.
  7. Reducing accidents: The drivers of public vehicles are professional drivers, who are less likely to be involved in accidents.
  8. Reducing noise: Vehicles make noise, which bother people especially in cities. Fewer vehicles mean less noise.
