Elections in Israel
On Tuesday, February 10th, 2009, Elections to the Knesset (the Israeli parliament)
will take place in Israel. All Israeli citizens aged 18 and above will be able to choose from a variety
of parties whom to give more mandates in the Knesset.
Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East.
Maybe you have heard about elections in other middle eastern countries, like Egypt or Syria,
but in these countries there is only one party to choose from – the governing party.
The Israeli parties vary from right wing to left wing, from hawkish to dovish.
The big parties are moderate – the ones from whom the government is usually established by.
I am proud to be a citizen of Israel. It is the state of the Jewish people,
one of the most ancient and honorable peoples in the world. Israel, as a democratic and modern state,
supports freedom, equality, and liberty.
I am proud to take part of choosing the people who lead the state.
February 7th, 2009.
