Gilad Shalit

Gilad Shalit is an Israeli soldier, held in Hamas' prison for the last three years. It has been publicized that Israel intends to release 980 Palestinian prisoners in return for releasing Shalit. Read the article in CNN for more details.

There has been a debate in Israel, and there always will be, about whether it is right to release numerous Palestinian prisoners in order to get one soldier back. Besides the numeric differences, these prisoners are in the Israeli prison for a reason: They are terrorists that are responsible for terror attacks on Israelis. The Israeli army has captured them in order to stop these attacks.

Statistics indicate that many of the Palestinian prisoners who get released repeat their violent behavior. Gilad Shalit, on the other hand, was supposed to be released from the army a while ago.

The Israeli government is very sensitive for its soldiers. It is willing to make this deal, even though it is clearly a rip off. Israeli soldiers risk their lives in order to keep the security of the state and its civilians and in this deal – the government is risking civilian lives in order to save a life of one soldier.

Israel is also sensitive for human rights, including prisoner rights. The Palestinian prisoners in Israel are able to get visits from their relatives. Gilad Shalit hasn't been seen by his family since he was captured. In fact, until recently there was no proof he was alive, when Hamas released a video of Shalit. Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev, two soldiers that were captured by Hezbollah at about the same time Shalit was captured – nobody knew what their condition was, and their issue ended when Israel released hundreds of prisoners for their dead bodies.

The deal for Gilad Shalit hasn't been made yet. Many questions are open. Will this deal promote peace? Will Hamas be encouraged to kidnap more soldiers? Will the released prisoners do more terror attacks?
