International Women's Day: Women, Politics and Peace

There are people who believe, that if women lead the world, there would be peace. With all my respect to women and with all my wish for peace (and I have the respect and the wish), I disagree with that belief. I'll start by giving two examples:
  • Margaret Thatcher (aka "Iron Lady") was a prime minister of the United Kingdom between the years 1979 and 1990. In 1982, there was the Falklands War between the United Kingdom and Argentina – the only war in history that occured between two democratic countries.

  • Golda Meir (sometimes nicknamed "Iron Lady" too) was an Israeli prime minister between the years 1969 and 1974. In 1973, there was the Yom Kippur War, one of Israel's toughest wars. Egypt and Syria attacked Israel simultaneously. It came as a complete surprise to Israel. According to facts known today, Golda Meir could have avoided the war, or at least prepare to it.
These are only examples, but in general I question the following situation: In most of the modern democracies today, men and women have an equal right to elect and to be elected. Why, then, are the majority of the leaders, politicians and representatives in these countries men?

I believe that in politics, like in politics, one has to have certain characteristics in order to achieve a senior position. These characteristics are typical to men. They include ambition, dedication and some aggression and corruption. Even in democratic countries, where leaders are elected in peaceful elections, one has to stand out of the crowd in order to get the popularity. In other words, for the same reasons women leaders would make peace if they could, they aren't elected to the necessary positions in the first place. Once a woman has managed to be elected – it's because she isn't different than her male competitors.
