Israelis as a Bedouin Tribe

Israelis as a Bedouin Tribe This week, the Jews are celebrating a holiday called "Sucot". The Hebrew word literally means "tents". This holiday is celebrated in memory of the time that the people of Israel roamed in the desert, just after they had got their freedom from Egypt, and before they have settled in the land of Israel.

In fact, most of the peoples of the Middle East used to be roaming tribes in the deserts of the area. In the past, it was hard to have agriculture in the desert, so people had to move constantly from place to place in order to get food and water. These people are called "Bedouins". In Arabic, the word literally means "People of the desert".

Only when time passed closer to modern times, more and more people settled down in territories. There were less and less Bedouins. There are still a few Bedouins today. Most of them are staying Bedouins mainly for the tradition.

The people of Israel are in fact an ex-Bedouin people, not different from other Middle Eastern peoples. They never had any privileges more than other peoples. They had to fight for their freedom, and they had to fight for a land of their own.

Sucot is a holiday that tightens the bond between the people of Israel and the land of Israel. Remember that it is not obvious to live in a home, and be thankful to live in one. My ancestors didn't always live in what they called home. There are people around the world that still don't.
